Forged in Steel, Unfazed by Wind and Snow | YIWEI AUTO Conducts High-Cold Road Tests in Heihe, Heilongjiang Province

To ensure the performance of vehicles in specific weather conditions, Yiwei Automotive conducts vehicle environmental adaptability tests during the R&D process. Based on different geographical and climate characteristics, these adaptability tests generally include extreme environmental testing under high temperatures, extreme cold, high altitudes, icy/snowy conditions, intense sunlight, and corrosive environments. Last year, following the high-temperature tests in Xinjiang’s Turpan during the summer, Yiwei Automotive initiated high-cold tests in Heihe, Heilongjiang Province, for their new energy vehicles.

Heihe is located in the northern part of Heilongjiang Province, near the source of cold air, the vast Siberian grasslands. In winter, the average daily temperature drops to -30°C, and in some areas, it can reach as low as -40°C. Yiwei Automotive brought three vehicle models, including an 18-ton pure electric washing and sweeping vehicle, a 4.5-ton pure electric self-loading and unloading garbage truck, and a 10-ton pure electric compression garbage truck, for high-cold road tests in this area.

The tests encompassed seven main categories, including conventional component verification after immersion in low temperatures, low-temperature reliability driving verification, low-temperature range verification, low-temperature loading operation performance verification, low-temperature cold start verification, and low-temperature charging verification.

01. Low-temperature cold start verification:
Facing severe cold, traditional fuel vehicles often encounter difficulties such as poor fuel vaporization, high lubricating oil viscosity, and even condensation, as well as low battery terminal voltage, resulting in failure to start normally. For electric vehicles, low-temperature cold start tests the entire “three-electric system,” including the battery, motor, and electric drive. In an environment of -30°C, after immersing the vehicles in low-temperature conditions for more than 12 hours, the test engineers successfully started the vehicles in low-temperature cold conditions. Even in extremely cold environments, Yiwei’s new energy vehicles can start up normally.

02. Whole vehicle heating effect verification:
After the low-temperature cold start, the test engineers conducted tests on the vehicle’s heating effect through the air conditioning system. By activating the heating function, the engineers assessed the maximum heating capacity and the stability of warm airflow by observing the temperature rise inside the vehicle. After 15 minutes of heating, the interior reached a comfortable temperature.

03. Conventional component inspection after immersion in low temperatures:
After being left idle overnight in the frigid environment, the test engineers inspected the vehicle’s conventional components, including tires, interior and exterior decorations, various functions in the driver’s cabin, power battery systems, high and low-pressure wiring harnesses, etc. This evaluation aimed to assess their reliability in extremely cold conditions. The test results showed no significant damage or malfunctions in the conventional components.

04. Low-temperature charging verification:
To improve the vehicle’s range capabilities in extremely cold conditions, the vehicle was equipped with a battery cell self-heating system. By maintaining the battery cell temperature through self-heating, the test demonstrated that Yiwei’s new energy sanitation vehicle achieved fast charging effects even in extremely cold conditions, taking only 50 minutes to charge from 20% to 100%.

05. Low-temperature range testing:
To improve the vehicle’s range capabilities in extremely cold conditions, the vehicle was equipped with a battery thermal management system, which ensures excellent discharging performance even in low-temperature conditions, providing strong support for the vehicle’s range capability. During the range testing process, the range achievement rate exceeded 75%, surpassing last year’s extreme cold range testing standards for passenger vehicles by a wide margin.

08. Low-temperature reliability driving verification:
Based on the actual working conditions of sanitation vehicles, road tests were conducted on different road conditions such as urban roads, rural roads, and icy/snowy surfaces. The vehicles accumulated 10,000 kilometers of driving, aiming to identify any issues that may arise in low-temperature environments, provide feedback, and eliminate problems before entering the market.

09. Low-temperature loading operation performance verification:
In Heihe, Yiwei Automotive conducted operational tests on a 4.5-ton pure electric self-loading and unloading garbage truck. The tests involved automatic lift of garbage bins, sealing and transfer of garbage, and unloading operations, demonstrating the capability of performing garbage loading and unloading operations in high-cold conditions.

For electric vehicles, conquering high-cold environments has become a “mandatory course” before leaving the factory. Extreme cold testing is not just a simple test for vehicles; it encompasses multiple aspects of verification, such as the performance of power batteries and thermal management systems in low-temperature environments.

Through this high-cold road testing, Yiwei Automotive aims to verify the overall vehicle and system component’s environmental adaptability in high-cold regions, as well as the adaptability of the vehicle’s thermal management system in such areas. The results will provide a reliable basis for future product developmentI’m sorry, but I am an AI language model and I don’t have real-time information or access to specific company data such as Yiwei Automotive’s activities in 2024.
