How to ensure the reliability of the controller–Introduction to the hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform (HIL)-1

01 What is Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation platform?

 

Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation platform, abbreviated as HIL, refers to a closed-loop simulation system where “Hardware” represents the hardware being tested, such as Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), Motor Control Unit (MCU), Body Control Module (BCM), and other hardware components. “In-the-loop” refers to a complete, closed loop where the controller receives the state of the controlled object, issues commands to the controlled object, and then sends control commands again based on the feedback from the controlled object. With such a loop, we can simulate and test the controller’s performance under different states and conditions of the controlled object, evaluate its functionality, and assess its reliability and compatibility with the relevant requirements.

  Hardware in the Loop

So, what are the components of this loop? If we want to test a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), the HIL device needs to simulate all the components that the VCU can directly or indirectly control. If we want to test a Motor Control Unit (MCU), the HIL device needs to simulate the driving motor, continuously receive the commands issued by the MCU, and provide the correct status information based on the commands. Taking the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) as an example, to test the VCU, the controlled object can only be the entire vehicle. In this case, the loop consists of the Vehicle Control Unit and the vehicle itself. After the vehicle is started, the VCU sends control commands to the vehicle based on its state and continuously receives feedback from the vehicle, repeating this process until a vehicle shutdown signal is received.
