Steering-by-wire technology for chassis-1

Under the two major development trends of electrification and intelligence, China is at a turning point of transitioning from functional cars to intelligent ones. Countless emerging technologies have made significant progress, and as the main carrier of intelligent driving, automotive wire-controlled chassis technology will create a new future.Advanced automatic driving will be based on wire-controlled chassis in the future.

Wire control technology refers to a technology that uses “electric wires” or electrical signals to transmit control information, replacing the “hard” connection of traditional mechanical connection devices to achieve control. The wire-controlled chassis consists of five systems: steering, braking, suspension, drive, and shifting. The wire control system replaces some bulky and low-precision pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical connections with sensor, control unit, and electromagnetic actuators driven by electrical signals, so it has the advantages of compact structure, good controllability, and fast response speed. Today, let me first introduce wire-controlled steering technology.

Compared to passenger cars, commercial vehicle steering technology needs to overcome challenges such as heavy loads, long wheelbases, and multi-axis steering. Currently, the main function of commercial vehicle steering systems is to provide steering assistance. However, advanced functions such as speed-adjustable steering assistance, automatic return to center, active steering control, and autonomous adjustment of steering assistance mode are still in the research and trial installation stage and have not been widely implemented.

Commercial vehicle steering assistance is primarily hydraulic-based, and it faces many problems that need to be addressed:

(1) The existence of high-pressure oil circuits can cause noise.

(2) The steering assistance characteristics are not adjustable, resulting in poor driving experience.

(3) There is no electronic control/wire control function.

With the development of electrification and intelligence technology, commercial vehicle steering systems are shifting towards electric control and wire control steering technology. Currently, there are new commercial vehicle electric control steering systems such as Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS), Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems, and other new steering gear technologies.

These new commercial vehicle electric control steering systems not only address the inherent shortcomings of traditional hydraulic steering systems but also significantly improve the overall steering performance of the vehicle. They have active control functions, thereby enhancing driving safety and experience.
